Title: ROBOTIC ASSEMBLY OF THIN FILM SMART STRUCTURES

Present automated manufacturing techniques cover a vast majority of today’s current technologies. However, with the continuously expanding complexity in the design and material selection for electronic assemblies, new and creative techniques are needed to develop an automated assembly process. Sensors made from thin film components are one of these emerging designs. This research addresses the detailed analysis and development of new techniques for picking, transporting, and assembling these thin film components utilizing robotic technology. The first phase in this process included analyzing the characteristics of the sensitive materials and devising a concept for handling the components. In the second phase, equipment was fabricated, interfaced with a robot, robot programs were written, and experimental testing was conducted. The difficulties encountered were examined and solutions were developed. Recommendations for future research are provided based upon the conclusions formed during this research.
